I love her voice. With or without electronic treatment, the version she does of ‘Love Me Tender’ is just insane, the way she breaks her voice going up, and then gives more power and possibility through the modulation – not that she needs it. It’s so crazy, this record. Every time I listen to it, I’m like: what kind of background, what kind of life do you have to come to this odd mix of free jazz and electronic music? This very pop structure that you’re also fighting? But then, pop music for me is really, really broad. Commercial Album by The Residents is a pop album to me. I think of pop more as a capacity to lay out melodies and change them than the capacity to reach a large audience.
