7. Alice ColtraneTuriya Sings

This is a record I’ve been listening to for about twelve years, and I really vividly remember the first time I heard this I thought, ‘What is this? This is absolutely insane!’ Through repeated listens, as a musician, I discovered how complex it is – not only in melodies, the use of glissandi, and the layout of synthesizers, but also in how she mixes her voice. It’s so wonderful. The way she brings her voice decisively to the foreground or background made me think about that power. You almost only feel this way of growing and going to quieter places in classical music, but she captures it here. And again, language doesn’t get in the way. You recognise certain words, but mostly you’re just immersed in this unique atmosphere.
