Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Aphex TwinDrukqs

One of my flatmates at university, in Liverpool, listened to Aphex Twin all the time, and the sound of this music was just always coming through the walls – these heavy beats and the woozy drums, and at first I was just like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ It was so intense. Anyway, I eventually asked what it was and he said I should listen to this one album, that I might like it because of the piano and of course I just fell for it and again it opened up a whole different world, the world of Richard James – his way of hearing, his sense of sound levels, the intensity. And actually it made me appreciate all his music, the relationship I had with this album.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Tony Njoku, Gwenno, Greg Fox
