Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. KraftwerkTrans-Europe Express

I guess there’s going to be a few electronic artists who have this in their list isn’t there? But they have that standing and importance which keeps them relevant.

Pillars of a kind of electronic canon?

Yeah, and when you think of them, they kind of appear like pillars, like structures or something. When I first started playing properly going on tours and travelling in Europe, this was the music that soundtracked that time and that landscape – the view out of the window of a van or train. In some ways, this new album of mine is an attempt to escape that influence – the totally industrial, metronomic music. I’m always trying to find a way of introducing the organic. Trying to find a synthesised whole.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Gavin Friday, James Fry, Holly Johnson, Andy McCluskey
