4. CoilUnnatural History

I discovered Coil at Rough Trade in London, after I’d seen Possessed from the States. They played with Voivod back in 86, I think it was. I’d heard about Coil through the fact that they were supposed to do the soundtrack to the Hellraiser movie but the movie company wasn’t really into it. One of the albums I like a lot is a collection of bits and pieces called Unnatural History, I really love the loops, the way they build, they can be really dark and disturbing and then by the next track they can be really beautiful and uplifting. I love the change of emotions.

In the early 90s, I became quite obsessed with loops, which then really influenced me on my project Dark Sky Burial which I’ve done a lot of records with lately, mainly for myself I suppose. Coil were really influential on the industrial scene, if you want to call it that, as especially back then it was very challenging to create loops the way they did it, with tape, 4-tracks and 8-tracks. They definitely influenced me with that building of drama. I love them.
