Ivo’s [Watts-Russell, 4AD founder] beautiful cathedral of melancholia. This Mortal Coil wasn’t merely an album, it was a séance, like stepping into a sort of a collective dream half-remembered from a past life. Etheric vocals blended with wise music, it’s fragile and vulnerable, and I admire that. Elizabeth Fraser singing Tim Buckley’s ‘Song To The Siren’ remains one of the best cover versions ever.
