Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Van MorrisonAstral Weeks

I discovered this only about ten years ago maybe, which is a shame. Now I think I have eight different versions of this album. I don’t really like the later Van Morrison stuff. I don’t know what they were doing during the recording sessions. At times the whole thing gets offbeat somehow, in a really good way. I think it’s because they recorded guitars and vocals together. The elements sit perfectly together, while the imperfections make everything so fragile at the same time. That combination makes the album really powerful and unique. The album feels like in constant equilibrium. It feels like a special moment in history when everything is in its right place. It’s beautiful.
