10. SuicideSuicide

Cheree records was named after their song. Then, Ché Records is half of ‘Cheree’, and is also another song from Suicide. When I left, I thought ‘Hmm, ‘Rocket USA’? Hmm, ‘girl’! ‘Rocket Girl’!’ It just suits the label so well with all the space rock.

I remember trying to release a Suicide album on Cheree or Ché. They wanted £2,000 to do a live album, which we couldn’t justify. When we were championing a lot of these bands, it was too soon. We’d have got a two or three-year licence, and it’s not like we’d have made our money back.

I knew Spacemen 3 liked Suicide, so that’s how I got into them. I got an old tape-to-tape ghetto blaster, put it in the car and wind the windows down. I would play ‘Frankie Teardrop’ and drive around Rugby. The song is just screaming basically! It was so loud. I thought I was so cool driving around Rugby listening to all this crazy music. Maybe I was cool?!
