Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. Miles DavisGet Up With It

When someone played Get Up With It, and told me to listen to the drums, the world just opened up. There’s these hard cuts in it, and you can picture Miles in front of a desk just pulling all these big knobs down – the expression of dynamics is just… wow.

Do you remember who played it to you and where you were?

It was my dearest friend Johnny that plays drums in Part Chimp, a long, long time ago. Since then, I think I’ve purchased this record five or six times. I’m a bit obsessive, I collect records, and you know when you love a book so much you keep buying it for other people, because you want to be that person who showed it them, who says you have to listen to this because it changed my fucking life? I keep doing that with this.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Oren Ambarchi, Gruff Rhys, Nils Frahm
