9. This HeatThis Heat
Tomaga wouldn’t exist without This Heat. Charles Hayward is one of my dearest friends and a mentor to me. I’ve been living in London for 22 years now and he’s always been so supportive of my drumming, perhaps not quite a father figure, but he’s someone I really worship. When we play together, he wants to learn from me too, which is so flattering.
Where did you meet?
It’s a good question. I don’t know the first time. We played with him so many times, and I have a split record, a 7" with him. He’s for real. It’s not staged. He will put on stage whatever is in his mind, and there’s no boundaries, and he is phenomenal for that, I love the man. We did a few improv gigs in little places in London, and he was the one who introduced me to Thurston Moore when they were after a drummer for the Can project where I filled in for Jackie and we did Monster Movie at the Barbican.
