Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Hamlet Gonashvili is considered one of the foremost singers of Georgian table songs, which is a genre of music that I very much enjoy. He has this incredibly velvety beautiful voice that really lends itself to the extremely long phrasing of Georgian polyphonic songs. ‘Tsintskaro’ is one of my favourite songs of all time and it’s on this record. The way that Georgian harmony and polyphony is arranged has a kind of medieval quality but also has things that are weirdly atonal or very unusual and I just think that it’s incredibly beautiful music.
