I love this album and I have done for ages. It’s not a difficult record to love: it’s wonderful easy listening in a way, and not as hard as some of his other records. I love ‘So What’, like everyone does. When you love jazz, you can go into ever more complex and ever more difficult things, but I suppose I do like the ones that are not so hard to listen to. Miles Davis was the first sort of jazz that I came to love when I was young, and I’ve always gone on loving it. I never met him, although I went to a lot of his concerts. I’ve read his book, did you read that? It’s extraordinary. I love all that stuff about John Coltrane. ‘That terrible heroin addict, I couldn’t stand it!’ What a hypocrite. He was terrible to women, too: he was a wife beater. But he was a great musician.
