Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. Miles DavisKind Of Blue

The first time I heard this record it felt like the sound of midnight – it’s music that comes from that part of the soul which understands the night – that’s why even today I sometimes put on this album when I’m going to sleep, not in order to sleep but so that I can appreciate the night. This was the first record I bought. I was going to my uncle’s house and this was playing on the radio and while I was driving I remember looking at the reflection of the traffic lights on the wet road. The music complimented that image so beautifully. This stayed with me because there was something so evocative about the music, the music had the ability to conjure up images all throughout.
