Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Public Image LtdMetal Box

This was a massive influence, and it fulfilled the promise of punk. Searing white-noise guitars, heavy drums and whale-ocean deep bass from Wobble, with Lydon’s agony and compelling lyrics riding the atmosphere – cold, but burning deep. I remember seeing them on Christmas day, in grim Finsbury Park: grey, cold, hungry but futuristic. "Yes!", I thought. "Now we have arrived at the future."

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Gavin Friday, Helm, Primal Scream, Steve Mason, Sarah Cracknell, Doug McCombs
