Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

1. Manu Di BangoMakossa Man

This is one of those obscure, old records that would have been in my dad’s collection – he played it a lot at home. The opening track is called ‘Pepe Soup’ – I remember wondering why it was called that, and listening over and over. It’s percussive, urgent, and heavy on the brass and horns, which he does really well. The whole album brought West African funk and highlife to a different level, and it’s stayed with me over the years.
