Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

1. Missy ElliottSupa Dupa Fly

When I was young, we had cable TV. We used to get Yo! MTV Raps in the evenings, and I’d stay up with my brothers or we’d catch the re-run on the Sunday. I’d seen this video for Missy Elliot’s ‘The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)’, and she was so cool. She’s giving it everything, the men there are totally respecting her, she owns her body, and she owns her voice. That was a big thing for me to see and understand. It was very inspiring.

Somebody bought me this Spice Girls CD, ‘2 Become 1’, and I remember opening it and going “what the fuck is this?” So we went to HMV – I remember seeing Supa Dupa Fly, and going to Mum “look it’s that!” And I got the blessing to buy it.
