Boards Of Canada may be teasing a new release, with a number of VHS tapes being sent out to fans from an address linked to Warp Records and its retail arm Bleep.
Video posted to Reddit shows that the tapes feature static and decaying analogue visuals, as well as shortwave-style audio and vocal samples, leading fans to speculate that the duo will soon release new music. One Reddit user said they received the tape unexpectedly “from the same address that Warp and Bleep use for shipping” in the US.
Some particularly tuned-in fans have identified samples from the tape’s audio that resemble material from the duo’s Societas x Tape, which Boards Of Canada recorded to air on NTS in 2019. It’s not yet known whether they are indeed teasing new material, or an archival release of some sort.
The rollout of the VHS tapes to select fans echoes past teaser campaigns by Boards Of Canada, which included the unannounced sale of a small number of 12-inch vinyl records on 2013’s Record Store Day in the lead-up to the release of that year’s Tomorrow’s Harvest LP. This year’s Record Store Day is scheduled for 18 April leading to further speculation that the duo may be gearing up to put out another limited release to mark the occasion.
