Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Fleetwood MacRumours

Nathan Means: Does anyone know if there was a debate in the band about whether to go with the American or British spelling of the album title? Because I personally can’t really imagine arguing about much else, even though they actually argued about everything. Rumours is a dollar bin mainstay. It is also much better than the new, say, Sharon Van Etten album. And I haven’t even heard her new record. There is a certain kind of obsessive post-cocaine smoothness masquerading as mellow that only appears on some albums from the 1970s. I can’t get enough. It’s a cultural artefact that I think is impossible to recreate. Sort of like my excitement over picking dipping sauces for Chicken McNuggets in 1982. Or the energy of Rumours-era punk. Stopping with that sentence.
