I completely missed it at the time and it’s one that just seems to have gone under the radar completely. It’s quite a strange score by Michael Nyman, like it’s so huge and emotive whereas the film is quite small scale, but I love that. I like this film because you have this sense of how disparate the sisters in it are and how the family is just about holding it together. I think it’s a really underrated film, an absolute gem in British cinema. It’s a little sentimental, perhaps, but I’m completely mystified as to why people don’t cherish it. I wonder if it’s something to do with his canon as well. It doesn’t have any whiz bangs in it, it doesn’t have big shocking moments. A lot of his other films, like Jude, 9 Songs, or I Want You, they’re all really strong flavours, whereas this is more everyday and less focused in some way. It’s more gaseous. I watched it a lot when I was in my 20s. It was a key film for me. I imbibed it.
