I’ll start from the beginning of my life. I remember my parents didn’t listen to much music. This was one of the few records my dad had in his car that was actually formative for me. This record had songs like ‘Please Mr. Postman’ by the Marvelettes and ‘Do You Love Me?’ [by The Contours]. It had The Temptations, the Jackson 5, Diana Ross and The Supremes. It was my first exposure to great pop music. And because there wasn’t much music in my household, it was maybe where a lot of that melodic information came from for me. I feel like it was a good basis for my musical education.
