13. Watty Burnett

Aye, ol’ Watty was played a lot, alongside Linton Kwesi Johnson, Burning Spear, Lee Perry and the On-U Sound stable… There was a great bass system there, I recall, and one particular corner of the club where the stoners would gather whenever we strayed into dub territory. We’d typically finish the evening off with something like this – a long bit of roots, something we could tack on additional dubs to, play around with the reverb, make burping noises down the microphone, pack up our records, that sort of thing. Then we’d watch with weary eyes as the punters slowly finished their drinks and gathered their coats. When the lights eventually went up, that was our cue to leave, quickly retreating into the cold and dark of the early Edinburgh morn.
