Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Massive Attack – Mezzanine

Blue Lines is the defining record culturally and historically, but I think Mezzanine is a better record. Sonically, it’s unreal, the mix on that record. They did the same thing that Radiohead did; they took the post-punk parts that they were growing up with, together with the influence of soul and reggae, and combined it in a way to create a very unique and powerful record. The balance between live, electronic and bottom end is one of the best mixes ever in that way. It brought an intimacy to the band; it made them more of a band.
