Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Simple MindsSons Of Fascination/Sisters Feeling Call

Simple Minds were great – it was like that Roxy Music/Genesis/glam thing reinvented, but with real bollocks to it. ‘Love Song’ and ‘Sweat in Bullet’ are kind of – I won’t say Hi-NRG – but really powerful, electronic pop. I loved that you could dance to Simple Minds as well. The tragedy of Simple Minds was that when they hit their commercial peak they were massive. ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ broke them in America, but they got a bit cynical about the whole thing. At first they were seen as quite niche music but then they went mainstream and fluffy and not really representative of what they were about.
