Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. ChicC’est Chic

This was the disco album that really got me going. That whole Nile Rodgers sound, the whole stable of Sister Sledge and everything. Donna Summer was huge at the time. Saturday Night Fever. Disco going alongside punk and almost… Saturday Night Fever almost crossing over with the punk sensibility. I hated that you had to be either punk or disco. It was basically all people going out and enjoying themselves and enjoying the energy and the music. I loved disco and I was really into Northern Soul as well. I loved dancing and going out and getting off with girls. The disco was the place to be. I love Chic. And Sylvester, ‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)’, Anita Ward ‘Ring My Bell’ and all that stuff too. It was a kind of guilty pleasure. If you were a working class schemie you had to pretend you were doing it ironically. It was seen as girls’ music.
