Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. UltravoxSystems Of Romance

My absolute favourite thing, still, is late 70s / early 80s synth pop. I was a devotee and that was my time, really; that’s when I really got into music. My best friend at school, David Clegg, and I were massively into John Foxx. I think we got into him backwards – we started with Metamatic and then went back. You know, Ultravox were huge because of ‘Vienna’ but we didn’t notice them when John Foxx was leading them and suddenly, two years later, it was too late!

So we got into them retrospectively. Ha! Ha! Ha! I really loved, but Systems Of Romance is such a fascinating record and it really is a proto-John Foxx solo album. It’s not like I listen to this regularly but when I do, my god, it takes me back – it’s always summer and it’s always a sixth form holiday kind of atmosphere. Wonderful.
