Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Sonny SharrockBlack Woman

My reason for this pick is because of Linda Sharrock. Her voice was, and still is, one of a kind, it has a divine quality to it. The first time I heard it, and any time I hear any of her music I’m overwhelmed with joy. It feels like freedom, like someone who’s really utilising their body in a way that embodies that. I heard this album in 2010 when I was exploring extended vocal techniques, things outside of lyrics. I was exploring with my voice, but what she does will fill up your room and your soul in a way that I don’t know if I’m capable of doing. Either you’ve got it or you don’t, but I was taking the first initiative to open up those doors of experimenting.
