Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Miles DavisBig Fun

What made you choose this Miles Davis album over any other?

Yes, there are many more I could have named here. This was my step into Miles Davis’s music and in the beginning, I was very into his electric-oriented decade. It’s still quite polyrhythmic but it’s not as much of a well-known record as some of his others. At the time that I was discovering this, I was very into Can and I felt this record was quite connected to them in some ways. It has a very interesting rhythm section for example. I think, at this time too, he was very into drugs [laughs]. It’s very psychedelic but not too much like a lot of similar music in the 1960s would have been.
