1. The Tornados‘Telstar’ / ‘Jungle Fever’

It’s one of the first songs I remember hearing. Obviously the Joe Meek thing drew me in, because it’s such a different sound. The reverbs, you’re out in space with it, it gives it that sense of adventure. Telstar was the communications satellite that launched into orbit in 1962, so it’s picking up on all the excitement of that. But then there’s B-side, ‘Jungle Fever’, which opens with a roar, then the rhythms and percussions come in. This whole list is very rhythmic because rhythmic movement hit me straight away as a kid. I used to play it endlessly. I had a little junior drum kit and a set of bongos and I would drum along.
