Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. The Yardbirds‘Evil Hearted You’ / ‘Still I’m Sad’

It was massive. I love The Beatles  and all that, but when I heard this… it felt revolutionary. They were very experimental rock songs, taking things in a while new direction, but still with a very basic setup, of guitar, drums and bass. It’s what ‘Jungle Fever’ and ‘Telstar’ did to me as well, something that opened me up, that was new, a different tool to all the pop I was listening to. It was a raw sound that I needed. I was transformed by that dark edge, it seems to help my creativity. Sonically I mean, I don’t need things to be miserable! Just that I know I can enter that world and get back out of it if I need to.
