I’ve got to be honest, I always loved them, but I’d forgotten how good they were until I saw Julien Temple’s film [Oil City Confidential, a Feelgood biopic released in 2010]. And you just realise: they’re as important as The Ramones aren’t they? Fucking incredible band. You’ve got to love Wilko Johnson’s lust for life, the way he never took the chemo. But he’s getting all these awards now and finally getting recognised – he’s had the best year of his life after fifty years. Dr. Feelgood came along when everybody was trying to be Donovan, and they were just building site workers from Southend who didn’t give a fuck. They were truly working class, and they were real. They could have come from the West End of Glasgow.
