Lulu was my first love as a nipper. I thought she was super pretty, and I loved seeing her on the telly. She still looks and sounds fantastic. I’d have loved the Nightingales to do a record with Lulu because she’s the queen. She’s done miles better songs than ‘I’m a Tiger’. Now, when I listen to ‘Show Me’, or even ‘Shout!’, I just go, ‘Wow, this is fucking fantastic!’ I was 10 and she was the prettiest person I’d seen in my life. The song and the voice were just great.

Do you ever interrogate why you might have been obsessed by those ones in particular?
