12. Freakwater

I very much wanted to make a country record. I made it with Janet Bean who is one half of Freakwater. And I love both halves of Freakwater! This is one of Janet’s songs that’s not on the album we made together but we did one gig in London and Janet suggested I sing this – ‘My History’ off End Time, their best album. That she suggested I do it means a lot to me. I like the melodies, the sparseness of country music – I am a romantic! – and the lyrics can really move me. I’m the kind of writer that goes all around the Wrekin to say something. So, if I want to say ‘I love you’ it takes me several pages. And when someone can do it in a sentence it blows me away. You might have someone in Henry Cow who thinks that’s sentimental crap, but fuck ‘em!.
