As all right-thinking people know, Primal Scream are only any cop when they’re engaging with the malvolent, hissing spirit of Suicide rather than mincing around trying to be the embodiment of some dodgy idea of rock ‘n’ roll.
So it’s no surprise that the band have done one of the Suicide covers being released via Blast First in honour of the mighty Alan Vega’s 70th birthday.
The latest installment in the series, which has actually been available in the Quietus’ local vinyl emporium for weeks although it’s supposedly not out until March 30th, sees Primal Scream covering ‘Diamonds, Furcoat, Champagne’. Lydia Lunch lends her talents to a version of ‘Frankie Teardrop’, perhaps one of the bleakest tracks ever put to tape.
Speaking about their cover, Bobby Gillespie said, "Suicide songs are so perfect and fully realized that it was hard to pick one and reinterpret it in a personal way.
"We chose ‘Diamonds, Furcoat, Champagne’ as we loved the lyric and also its sci-fi futuristic sound. We did a garage rock glam version with French electro chanteuse Miss Kitten in the end, and tried to bring out the pop song that lies beneath every Suicide track."
