1. LoveForever Changes

I first heard this record when I moved to New York in 1993. I didn’t know anything about Love – I guess because they never turned into one of those mega bands of the 60s. But I was blown away by how beautiful the record was, especially the first song, ‘Alone Again Or’. The structure is so strange – it doesn’t really have a chorus, it has verses, and the last two lines of each verse sort of punctuate it like a chorus. And I loved that they could do something like that, and have it still hang together so well. Also, at first I hadn’t seen what the band looked like, and when I did, and I saw Arthur Lee, I was like, “There’s a Black frontman in this band, and I’ve never fucking heard of them! How did this band fucking escape me?” So that was also a pleasant surprise, and really inspiring.
