Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Ella FitzgeraldElla Fitzgeralds Sings The Cole Porter Songbook

There are two things that Ella Fitzgerald brought to Cole Porter’s music. I think she’s just an unbelievable singer, and, again, like Dusty Springfield could sing anything. What she did in all the songbooks was reintroduce that music to a new audience, it was music that really went into people’s heads and broke a lot of barriers. I had a period of listening to her singing this particular collection, first of all learning about her genius, and also the genius of Cole Porter – two in one. There are beautiful arrangements, her voice – it’s incredible. I just learned so much. I’m trying to think how I can sell you this album. I think it’s just genius.
