Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. BjörkVespertine

Vespertine is possibly the album that I’ve listened to the most in my entire life. There were big periods in my early 20s in which I’d listen to it every single day. It’s so emotionally detailed that I still don’t get bored of it. It’s her state of mind, her way of seeing the world, seeing fragility of emotion, or fragility that in fact isn’t actually fragile – in some ways she sees fragility as strength. Or small statements that aren’t actually small, but resonate with bigger things. I was just learning and learning from this. What’s happening here on a musical level is amazing.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Dale Cornish, The Anchoress, Lotic, Susanna, Teju Cole, Charlotte Church
