Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Nico

Nico’s voice is incredibly singular – there’s no great range to it, and it’s strangely restrained and un-emotional, and yet I find it incredibly powerful. I loved the pieces that she sang on The Velvet Underground & Nico and I was delighted to discover that she’d made some solo albums. The Marble Index for me stands out in her work, and in particular ‘No One Is There’. It seems to channel a kind of folk music through these incredibly modern electronic arrangements (again by John Cale). I don’t think there’s really been anything like it. I could happily listen to this song on repeat, and often do. It’s incredible stuff.
