As a kid I can remember being so scared of that album (D.O.A: The Third And Final Report Of Throbbing Gristle). I knew it was really wrong, and the more I found out about them the more I realised how wrong. I once got told that Genesis [P-Orridge] went into an S&M session in New York with an album of whale music and The Contino Sessions. I’ve always loved that.
The opening of Transmission [‘Metal Box’] – the first section in that, the unwelcoming discordance, the drones – it’s not an homage to ‘Hamburger Lady’, but I’ve always loved how unnerving their music was. So unsettling – visually, sonically… I was listening to D.O.A this morning. It’s unbelievable, the way there are these raw soundscapes underneath the electronics.
