Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Lili BoulangerD’un Soir Triste

This is my latest discovery, from my first year of driving. I was in a traffic jam, really stressed, and feeling like pulverising the steering wheel, or just getting out of the car and leaving it there, and I put on Radio 3 and there was this. I thought I was listening to something composed in the last 10 years, ‘normally they’d only play modern contemporary at night’, but it was rush hour. It’s only 10 minutes long but within that it seems to go to an anxiety attack and complete nihilism into resolution. I would recommend anyone having a panic attack to find this work, it goes right to the abyss of things, and then takes what you have in that knot and just unravels it, straightens things out. Discovering her other work has meant she’s become one of the two muses for Crying The Neck. I bought the CD and it’s the only thing in my CD player, like the emergency button.
