Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Believe It

I loved Allan Holdsworth, he’s on this Tony Williams Believe It record. And he’s an absolutely virtuosic guitar player. To me, he sounds like a horn player, like Cannonball Adderley or something. But he’s playing rock guitar, he’s got that rock guitar sound, but it’s absolutely beautiful like a jazz horn player.

Seeing Keiji Haino when I was young, I remember thinking again: Does he know what he’s doing? Is he just doing anything? I was young then, but I’ve noticed that when I’ve actually asked that question, that’s the stuff that in the end really sticks with me, and I want to investigate more. It’s not all out on the table. There’s something serious going on there, and I’m intrigued, and I want to find out what it is.
