Cilla nicked it and did a great big-time version of it, but Dionne Warwick did a much, much quieter, more delicate version of the song where it’s a real lament. You can end up with tears rolling down your face. You realise what a singer Dionne Warwick is, and Burt Bacharach and Hal David really gave her great stuff to sing. I don’t know if she ever forgave Cilla for taking that song because she regarded it as hers. There’s a standard version which is OK because she really is a gorgeous singer, but if you can get your hands on the version where she’s accompanied by a really, really delicate string arrangement – Eliza [Carthy, musician and Martin’s daughter] called it up for me on the computer – I’d be surprised if you can listen to the whole thing and not have tears running down your cheeks by the end of it. ‘Anyone who ever loved would look at me and know that I love you…’ Fucking hell, what a set of lyrics! I’m just silenced.
