Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

I mean, if there was a record, you know – this’ll sound a bit like Alan Partridge – but if there was a song or piece of culture or a tune, then it would be this track. I would say this is kind of the Holy Grail of ‘the sound,’ if you like. Those slo-mo records that had that spine tingling, majestic feel that, when you were high, just felt so incredible.

I love this record; it’s all just the sounds and the warmth, and it really makes your whole body tingle. I picked this up in the early 90s, with my best mate Ray, walking about New York, for $1, as you did in those days in a thrift store and got it home. And I just couldn’t believe how good it was. And this literally has been in the bag for about 33 years. It’s a very spiritual record, but it has almost a very slow disco sound. It’s got that groove to it. It’s a record that I would choose to play if I have a very responsive crowd who are all on the vibe of it.
