Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12.

Bunny Wailer – Blackheart Man
Bunny Wailer was in the Wailers, of course. He did a few solo albums. Peter Toshโ€™s records are great too, Equal Rights in particular โ€“ and Burning Spear, Heart of the Congos, they are all great. But Bunny Wailer is the most sunny and flowery. You just have to listen. Itโ€™s life-affirming, uplifting, positive. One of the things I like about reggae is the way they so effortlessly start talking about God. I think in most Western music, weโ€™re cowards, weโ€™re still under this cloud that rock & roll and religion have to be separate. But in reggae thereโ€™s this freedom and oneness about music and God, which to me is inspiring and sort of puts me to shame too.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
