2. AutechreDraft 7.30

This was the first Autechre album I heard, and it just blew me away because there was no point of reference for me. I had no idea where any of the ideas came from. It just sounded alien, like it had come from another planet. I hadn’t really discovered avant-garde music. I hadn’t listened to people like Bernard Parmegiani, or Luc Ferrari, or anyone like that. I could sort of tell that they listened to hip hop listening through the album. I generally like to know how things are made and where they come from, but I just couldn’t properly work it out with this record.

The artwork as well, by Alexander Rutterford, I’ve been sub-consciously ripping that off since [laughs]. It must have just come out when I first came across it because I remember buying it in HMV or something like that, and seeing the music video for ‘Gantz Graf’ for the first time. That’s still one of my favourite music videos ever made. There’s a certain colour to how the album sounds that I like, and the sleeve really captures how it sounds to me. The visual sits really well with the music and it’s something I think about a lot when I’m producing and doing visuals.
