8. Godspeed You! Black EmperorSlow Riot For New Zero Kanada

I first saw them at the Fleece in Bristol in 1999. I remember NME put them on the front cover around that time, which was a very uncommercial choice. They got really into post-rock for a short time, because Godspeed were on the front and then Mogwai were. I’ve still got both those copies of NME.

My dad lives in Montreal, and I had this mad moment at the Fleece gig when they played this video loop of a man in an anorak chucking his keys in the air and catching it, and I just somehow managed to convince myself that was my dad. And one of the bass amps exploded during the concert and sparks went everywhere, and it was just completely life-changing. I came home, and as I was lying in bed, I could just hear violins in my head. So it was a very big moment for me, which is why I’ve included Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada.
