Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Shuggie OtisInspiration information

This record was introduced to me by Rostam as we were making the record. I had obviously heard of Shuggie Otis; I knew ‘Strawberry Letter 23’, and I knew he was like this amazing kind of indescribable, undefinable kind of figure in music. But when I listened to this record, I was just like, “Wow, this guy was so ahead of the time.” We listened to it particularly in the mixing stage of Euphoric when we were in Buffalo, upstate New York with Dave Fridmann. I’ve just got some great memories attached to me and Rostam being in that part of America – it was very snowy, surrounded by woods and weird houses and witchcraft and all of that, and we’d be driving around Buffalo listening to this album as a reference and really analysing it.
