Joy Division – Closer

I was a contemporaneous fan of Joy Division while they were still going. I didn’t know anything about Manchester or England when I was listening to Joy Division when I was a teeanger in the late 70s. So the music to me seemed to represent a hopelessness and anomie, which reflected the New York zeitgeist of the late 70s. And that’s where I was during this period. If I had been in California at the time I don’t know that I would have paid them much attention.
