9. JyotiMama, You Can Bet!

This is Georgia Anne Muldrow, who is one of my favourites these days. Her more hip-hop stuff is amazing, and then I suppose this record is where she starts to show her absolute love of Sun Ra. Now, I don’t think I’ve made a playlist that doesn’t have Sun Ra on it in my life. This record has all the wild alien psychedelia of a Sun Ra record – I have no idea how she’s making it. I’ve no idea if there are live musicians, I’ve never read the liner notes. It’s beautiful, it grooves a little bit, not unlike Natural Information Society. Those two records work really well together as a duo. And in that world of post–R&B, in between hip hop and sampling and dance music, she’s the most joyful. I think there’s a part of that music that has a tendency these days to get a little dark, and she doesn’t ever get dark, so I love that. It’s like Gang Starr being the least dark hip hop record.
