10. LeilaLike Weather

When I did the first list of these, I didn’t have anything from the 1990s, which I found was a bit strange. I picked this, because when I look back at the 90s, my favourite music was trip hop, like Portishead, Tricky, Björk – I shouldn’t call her trip-hop – DJ Shadow, things like that. That Britpop time – I don’t think much of it has aged very well. Some of it sounds a bit hackneyed, a bit ridiculous.

But I really loved this record. What I really loved about it is that it was by a woman, and it is very much a DIY record. She also had a home studio back then, which back then was a bit unusual, and she was from an immigrant family from Iran. I found it quite inspiring, actually, and the music was so lovely. There’s a track called ‘Space Love’ on there, an instrumental, which I used to play a lot. That’s my nod to the 90s to show I wasn’t completely asleep!
