10. StereolabDots And Loops

Stereolab and Tortoise first played together in 1995 in St. Louis and for the next ten years they did a lot of their recording in Chicago. They lived at our warehouse with us and we toured together some and would see each other throughout the year.

I don’t know how much we influenced each other. It was more like mutual respect. We were inspired by a lot of the same stuff, but we differed on a lot of things too. One thing that I realised was that Americans and British each have their own take on the machine: the touring and making the records and things like that. They didn’t understand econo at all. But they were smart and had their own label [Duophonic Records] for the UK. I chose Dots and Loops because they had me play on it. I think it’s my favourite anyway.
